Social Media Influencers as Conduits of Knowledge
This project aims to evaluate how social media Influencers become conduits to communicate information.
Working with PI A/Prof Crystal Abidin, I am currently looking at
- Influencers & online hate in Korea [publication1 on 'backdoor ad scandal'] [journal website]

- Korea diasporic YouTubers in overseas
- international couple / family channels on YouTube

LGBTQ+ Influencers in Korea
This project examines media practices and roles of LGBTQ+ Influencers in Korea. A few streams of this project are funded by MCASI Curtin University, Social Science Research Council (US), Korean Society for Journalism & Communication Studies (KR).

이 연구는 한국의 성소수자 인플루언서들의 역할과 미디어 실천을 살펴봅니다. 연구의 일부는 호주 커틴대학교, 미국 Social Science Research Council과 한국언론학회의 지원을 받았습니다. 연구 주제들은 다음과 같습니다

Love & Hate in social media pop cultures
This project examines how love and hate are spurred and amplified in social media pop cultures in various forms, including eco-feminism, animal activism, networked crime against women and animals. Part of this project was funded by Korean Women's Association for Communication Studies.
- Networked complicity based on playful online hate culture (Publication in Korean journal PDF, journal website)

- Eco-feminism online (Stray cats, urban demolition, and online community in Seoul)

이 프로젝트는 소셜 미디어 대중문화에서 어떻게 사랑과 혐오가 야기되고 증폭되는지를 인터넷 상의 에코 페미니즘, 동물권 운동, 온라인 집단 범죄 등의 케이스를 통해 살펴 봅니다. 연구의 일부는 한국여성커뮤니케이션학회의 지원을 받았습니다. 구체적으로 보고 있는 주제들은 다음과 같습니다.

Influencers in COVID-19
This is a part of Social Media Influencers as Conduits of Knolwege project, conducted with PI A/Prof Crystal Abidin, Tommaso Barbetta, and Dr Weishan Miao.
We review the impact of the pandemic on influencers, and influencers’ engagements with and reactions to the pandemic in four different regions: Australia, China, Japan, Korea

이 프로젝트는 지식전달자로서의 소셜미디어 인플루언서 프로젝트의 일환으로, 크리스탈 아비딘 교수와 토마소 바베타, 웨이샨 미아오 박사와 함께 진행했습니다.
본 연구는 한국, 호주, 중국, 일본 4개국의 사례를 통해 인플루언서들이 판데믹으로부터 받은 영향과 이들이 판데믹 시대에 어떻게 사회 연결을 이어나가는지를 살펴봅니다.

Women of color in hookup culture (Tinder)
This book project started from my PhD thesis "Talking about race and gender with Tinder: raced and gendered visibility of non-white women". Through case study of Tinder, I study how women of color (who are often invisible and marginalized in hookup culture) find themselves at the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality, mediated by dating app Tinder.
I am currently developing the project for a book manuscript.
